“Girl My Hair Ain’t Like Yours, You Got That Good Hair”
3 Mar
O_o … that face doesn’t really fully and truly express how i feel every.single.time. i hear somebody say the whole “good hair/bad hair” thing. For years my father would ask me what the hell good hair was. You know what’s the worst part? I would actually have an explaination for him. So now that i know better, i don’t use those terms anymore because its actually really insulting and we wonder why young african american girls with courser textures feel inferior to their fellow looser textured peers.
THIS IS WHY! >>>GOOD HAIR! WTF!
Has your hair ever robbed anybody? Has it ever framed you for a crime? Do you keep getting into random trouble that you have no knowledge off because your hair strands sneak out at night?
I really don’t care if anyone thinks that’s lame but you get the point! I have seen naturals from the loosest texture to the tights coils style their hair and take care off it like you wouldn’t believe.
For example: Mwzedi http://public.fotki.com/mwedzi/

Or Sera
http://public.fotki.com/Sera252/all_about_hair/beyond-5-years-natu/
( I can’t embed Sera’s pictures)
Anyway the point is you really don’t get any more tightly coiled than these women and THESE WOMEN have some of the most beautiful and healthiest heads of hair that if have ever seen.
So all you bald halded, broken off ends, no edge having hens can miss me with that “Good hair / Bad hair” talk because its being said out of ignorance. I can understand if you don’t know any better but if you do and your still saying it… kill yoself.
Yes, this sounds harsh i know but this is coming from the fact that just about everyday i have struggle with my sister( who has gorgeous natural hair by the way) about how she feels about her hair. She’s only 8 and she buys into that “Good Hair/Bad Hair” crap. She’s always asking to wear it straight because she thinks its ugly. I am trying to get her to love her hair no matter what.
So to hear GROWN WOMEN saying it…… irks my nerves to no end
When will this “Good Hair/Bad Hair’ crap end?

Great post! At least your sister will have you as a good example. I struggle with the very same thing with my youngest daughter who’s 10. Child’s been asking for a perm for a few years now, and I know she has hair issues even though I’ve been natural all her life except for a a brief texturizer about 5 years ago. She has very thick, fine hair that gives braidouts like nobody’s business. She’s also tender-headed. Trying to get her to embrace her hair is a struggle, but I won’t stop trying.
Call me ignorant but I think genetics do have a say in hair length. I have just started to grow my hair by using techniques I’ve read online, and my hair has grown to shoulder length with in a year. I relaxed it. But I’m continuing to try to grow it longer. I try to be realistic and believing I could get my hair as long as this woman’s to me would be unrealistic. Maybe when people say someone has good hair they mean beautiful or healthy. I’ve been told my hair is good. Be I’ve never been offend. I guess it’s a complement. But I think my hair needs more TLC. Income cause me to not full care for my hair the way I’d like to but I do the best I can.

YOU are ignorant for saying that…you are not acknowledging the fact that you once were as ignorant as the women you now bash. AND I wish women would stop putting so much value on something dead (that is HAIR). I watched a touching video of a natural who recently passed due to cancer and in her last days wore wiggy wigs. I guess someone like you would call her “bald headed” or a “no edge hen.” This is ridiculous. Grow up. Edges or no edges, long hair or short YOU CAN STILL BE BEAUTIFUL!
I use the term “good hair”. I don’t mean any harm by it.I love my hair, but it is very hard to comb. I have very tight course hair. My daughter on the other hand has soft, looser curls making her hair easier to comb. I would much rather do her hair then do mine. That’s all I’m saying. However never called my hair bad…

I couldn’t agree more… Good hair/ Bad hair it’s a very subjective and caging statement. Just another way to create insecurities in women of color and make them a slave to societies standards. Ladies love every curl and curve on your body, you are not a mistake! Love the article Strawberri well said!
