So i found this post on NaturallyObsessed which is another natural hair blog by one of my twitter friends, KinkyKurlyQueen. The girl has some beautiful hair and i would recommend yall take her advice.. The other day while trying to catch up on some videos on YouTube, I came across this Baking Soda & Conditioner hair treatment. Now I have heard of naturals using baking soda as a substitute for shampoo. I even tried it myself once but I didn’t like it to much. Yet I never thought of using it as a treatment, like you would a deep conditioner. I found a couple of threads from LHCF.com and browsed through many positive and negative reviews of this treatment. Some ladies referred to it as a natural texturizer and others just raved about how moisturizing it was. So after reading many of their comments, watching more vids and doing my own research I decided to give it a try. I pretty much used the same recipe from ItsMsHeatherNicole’s (YouTube member) tutorial. I used : 1/2 Cup of Baking Soda 1 Full Cup of Conditioner (I used a mixture of Suave Sleek /Suave Tropical Coconut /Suave Humectant and a very small amount of Organix Shea Butter) 1 Cap Full of EVOO (optional but highly recommended) Directions : I applied it to rinsed, damp hair. ( I don’t recommend shampooing first because baking soda is a natural cleanser) Its best to apply it in sections for a more even distribution. Once my hair was saturated I covered it with a plastic bag and then a warm towel on top of that. I left the mixture in my hair for an hour. I rinsed my hair with lukewarm water and did a very, very gentle co-wash with Suave Sleek Conditioner. Rinsed with cold water and applied Kemi Oyl. My Outcome : My hair was so incredibly soft (not mushy) from root to tip. My curls were defined and springy and I could definitely tell that my frizz was greatly reduced. I would not say that my curls were elongated, but I did notice that it did reduce some of the bulk in the back of my head. I’m still trying to figure out how I’ll work this into my hair routine. Since the baking soda did such a great job of cleaning my scalp I think I might do this treatment once a month in place of using my shampoo….Maybe…Not really sure yet. Sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydrogen) if used too frequently has been known to lighten the hair. I look at this treatment as a deep cleanser that should only be done every once in a while. Please do your own research when attempting any hair treatment.
