How long have you been natural and when did you BC?
I received my last relaxer on May 23, 2009. I transitioned for 6 months before I did the big chop. I didn’t want to just cut all the relaxer out not knowing how my head looks underneath, so I decided that I wait. I didn’t have a set time in mind; I just figured I would transition until I felt comfortable enough to do the big chop. While transitioning I wore a twist-out at first, then I started doing a braid-out which seemed to last longer, and gave me a better look.
What are your staple products and hairstyles?
My staple products are Carol’s Daughter Tui Herbal Shampoo, Kinky Curly Come Clean shampoo, Cream of Nature Conditioner (Lots of it), and Carol’s Daughter Healthy Hair Butter. As I have only been styling “all natural” hair for a month, I am still trying out products to see how they work on my hair.
After doing the big chop, I had about 3 inches of hair, so I am pretty much wearing a teeny weeny afro. When I first got it cut, my friend twisted it for me, and I wore it that way for a week. As it grows out some more I will experiment with different hair styles.
What are your natural hair goals?
My natural hair goal is to take good care of my hair, and to have healthy, strong hair.
How do you keep your hair intact overnight?
I wear a bonnet on my hair over night. If I get upstairs and realize that my bonnet is still downstairs, I will put a silk scarf on. I always keep that in my draw as back up.
How do you maintain length?
I am going to get a trim next week. Since it’s only been a month I haven’t had to deal with this issue yet.
Name 1 reason you went natural and why you love being natural.
The main reason that I went natural is because I have a scalp condition called seborrheic dermatitis. It started getting worse with each relaxer that I received. So, I started thinking that maybe the chemicals in the relaxer was causing the condition, or at least making it worse. Also, my hair started thinning out around the edges. I felt that in order to get healthy hair, I would have to stop stripping it of its natural form. Since going natural I have not had any issues with my scalp, and the hair around my hair has grown back.
I love being natural because I am now caring for the hair that God gave me. I love the look and feel of my natural hair. I feel that I am more me now than I have ever been.
