What is your name and what do you do?
Malika Givens & I am Retail Support Specialist for Seagate Technology
How long have you been growing out your locs?
I started them Oct 26th 2008, so a lil over 2 years now.
Who is your loctician?
My Old Roomate/Friend from College. She is the best in the OKLAHOMA!!
What is your regimen for your locs?
I wash my locs 2 times a month. I use shampoo that is geared toward what I am trying to help maintain for example. When I first started my locs, the original Loctician made some way too small so I used a Dove Shampoo and Conditioner that was geared towards the older consumers ( I forgot the name ). I seen what it was doing for my grandmothers hair so I decided to try it out. It helped strengthen the hair and kept it soft.
Now I use Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Shampoo & Conditioner on a regular basis (in between color)
I use Organic Root Stimulator and Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-in-Conditioner. mixed together about once every six months. If I use the stimulator any more than that, my scalp will act a plum fool.
When I color my Locs I use I use Garnier Fructis Fortifying Shampoo & Conditioner, Color-Treated Hair. It helps protect it from sun damage and has additional color boosters/shields.
For once a month retwist/styling I use Murray's BEESWAX and Sof nFree Protein Styling Gel . Most people are against those two products because of buildup, but I dont have a problem with it. I sleep with a bonnet ON top of a satin durag/scarf to eliminate more of the problems like lint other small particles.
I wear my hair in a ponytail or just down but I recently tried some Bantu knots the curls didnt hold very good, and that was great because I like it better with just a lil bit of body...so it wont make my head look as big :)
Have your locs ever hindered you professionally?
Nope, Not that i know of.
Any advice to someone just starting out on their journey
Be patient. You cant mess them up...treat it as you would if it were flowing loose curls. Don't be afraid to try new products and use your best judgement when it comes to your hair, because you know it better than anyone else.
